Present at this fair, Quang Ninh’s products such as Tien Yen chicken, Cai Rong, Dai Yen fish sauce, Binh Lieu vermicelli made of arrowroot, clean vegetables grown by the Tien An Cooperative, Cai Lan vegetable oil and Van Don pearl will become more popular among consumers.

Halong bay comeback top 7 wonders 21st December, 1991, The Government of Vietnam permitted the setting up a of file on Ha Long Bay to be submitted to UNESCO for recognition of Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage Site. During the two year period 1991 to 1993, UNESCO nominated many expert delegations to come to Quang Ninh to survey, research, guide and review the ongoing file. Ha Long Bay’s file was completed and sent to UNESCO, Paris, for consideration in 1993, to be addressed at the 18th session.
On 17th December, 1994, the World Heritage Committee officially recognized Ha Long Bay as a World Natural Heritage Area at its 18th session in Phu Ket, Thailand, because of its universal aesthetic value according to criteria (iii) of the Convention.

The second time:

At the request of Ha Long Bay Management Department and IUCN, in September 1998, Prof. Tony Waltham, the top expert on Geology of Trent University, Nottingham, conducted a survey of the limestone karst of Ha Long Bay. He submitted his report to UNESCO Paris and Switzerland, IUCN Offices (Ha Noi) and to the Ha Long Bay Management Department. As a result, on 25th February, 1999, the World Heritage Center requested Quang Ninh People’s Committee, Vietnam’s National Commission for UNESCO and the Ha Long Bay Management Department to prepare a file to submit to UNESCO for the inscription of Ha Long Bay’s outstanding values of geology and geomorphology.

In July 1999, the file was completed and sent to the World Heritage Center’s Office in Paris. In December 1999, at the 23rd Congress of UNESCO held in Marakesh, Morocco, UNESCO officially considered the file. In March 2000 Professor Ellery Hamilton Smith, a member of IUCN was delegated to come to Ha Long to check the validity of the file and its geological value and to evaluate the management situation and make recommendations. In July 2000, at its mid-year meeting, the World Heritage Center, Paris, officially proposed that the World Heritage Committee recognize Ha Long Bay as a World Natural Heritage Site for its universal values of geology and geomorphology.

On 2nd December, 2000, at the 24th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, the World Heritage Committee unanimously decided to recognize the universal geological value of Ha Long Bay for the second time according to criteria (i) of the International Convention on the Protection of the World National and Cultural Heritage of the world,

Vietnamese handicrafts and gastronomy have attracted thousands of visitors at the Ottawa Tulip Festival held from May 1 to 18 in Canada, which Vietnam joined for the first time.

According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada Nguyen Duc Hung, many people said they admired Vietnam’s culture and its unique handicrafts and they wish to visit Vietnam in the coming time.

The Vietnamese embassy will participate in other international festivals and exhibitions to promote Vietnam’s images and culture to Canadian people and foreign friends, the ambassador said.

The Ottawa Tulip Festival is one of the largest tulip festivals in Canada and it is held in May every year to welcome spring.

Grand celebration of Dien Bien Phu Victory

A grand ceremony was held in Dien Bien Phu City on May 7 to mark the 55th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7) and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of northern Dien Bien Province (June 28).

Joining thousands of local people on the occasion were Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat; Tong Thi Phong, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and National Assembly Vice Chairwoman; Huynh Dam, member of the Party Central Committee and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.

Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Lo Mai Trinh spoke of the great significance of the victory – one of the glittering feat of arms and a golden mark in the country’s history of fighting against foreign aggressors for national liberation, construction and defence.

After 55 years of liberation, the province has focused on overcoming the aftermath of the war, promoting economic restructuring and developing its potentials. Its economy grew by 8.3% annually in the 2001-05 period and the rate reached 10.87% per year from 2006-08. The proportion of industry, construction and services in the province’s economy has been rising year after year.

The Party and State have recognized the accomplishments of Dien Bien Province with numerous honours, including the Gold Star Medal, the Ho Chi Minh Medal, the Independence Medal and Labour Medal.

On this occasion, Dien Bien was bestowed with the Ho Chi Minh Medal for the second time.

A procession and an art-sport programme were also held to mark the event.
